“The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.”
Steven Biko
30 years ago, September 12, 1977, Steven Biko was brutally beaten to death while in jail. Initially, the South African government announced that he died from a hunger strike. However, Biko's friends and allies continued to demand the truth. The story of his struggle to change his country by helping to empower "the oppressed" resonated worldwide. His voice stood out as a cry for freedom and the rest of the world slowly began to pay attention to the plight of the black population in South Africa. News of his death and of the ongoing confrontations to find out exactly what happened to him shifted the people whom he was trying to reach. The empowerment grew.
One voice, determined to confront the oppressor to show how it was done.
