thought du jour

"Of all tyrannies, tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make Hell on earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be 'cured' against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals. But to be punished, however severely, because we have deserved it, because we 'ought to have known better,' is to be treated as a human person made in God's image."
C.S. Lewis.

This sure drums up many examples in my head...............How's about a toast to freedom of thought and freedom of choices? Spirits should never be shackled.

hey dustin......i had this quote written down for future use and then read your post on the Jesus Camp......egads!
My first thought when I read it actually was of the "church lady" character Dana Carvey used to do on Saturday Night Live...... then I began thinking of the people I have listened to sermonize by expressing that only "believers" matter.......NOT the ones trying to figure it out.......then, my thinking went to politics and government and the power authority has on people........hmmmmm just a few thoughts I had.

Politicians all seem to be far too eager to tell us how to live our lives. On the right they try to tell us they're protecting us and they try to tell us morally. And on the left they try to tell us they know what we want out of life better than we do and that they know how better to spend our money than we do.

Generally what these politicians feel is best for us is a bit off the mark.

I don't know how things are going for you north of the border under the Harper government but here in the states I believe there's a general sense that both of our major political parties are so hell bent on smearing each other that neither is really doint their jobs-- neither is really doing anything that even vaguely resembles what is right/best for its citizens... And that would be taking a hands off approach and giving us back a bit more control of our lives and the directions our lives are taking.
