Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon."
Said the old man, "I do that too"
The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants."
"I do that too," laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, "I often cry."
The old man nodded, "So do I."
"But worst of all," said the boy,
"it seems Grown-ups don't pay attention to me."
And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.
"I know what you mean," said the little old man.
Shel Silverstein.

Such a beuatiful poem. The circles of life are amazing to witness and connect us to the source. Thanks for the reminder!
The older I get, the more I realize the truth of that.
I love this.
Isn't it amazing, the wisdom that kids (and others) can come up with?
Thank you for sharing it with us.

and so do i......
Beautiful. Thank you.
This makes me nearly cry.
So Beautiful.
So sad.
So true.
i have a picture (but not a scanner) of my father in law sitting on the front porch with my daughter when she was only 2. She's sitting down on the step below looking up at him, passing a piece of grass. He's looking right at her......the pic makes it look like they are sharing a secret. it's in their smiles. This is the pic i had in my head when i read this poem.
Then I thought of my father in law this spring when we went to visit him for the last time. His illnesses and Alzheimers has stripped him of his ability to be independent and to care for himself in anyway..... as well, his words were leaving him. As much as we tried to pay attention to him, to talk with him, he was fading away.
Reading this poem....brought this scene back in my head again too.
I'm glad it touched you all too....and perhaps conjured up pictures in your heads of the people in your lives.
How did you know this was one of my favorite Shel poems? His books have held a prominent spot on my book shelf since childhood.
Have you read 'The Missing Piece'?
what a lovely poem - thanks for sharing it..Katie,x
hey Tori....didn't you know I'm psychic? :) I havent read the Missing Piece, but will ask around this weekend to see if i can get my hands on it. my fav (so far) is The Giving Tree.
Katie....glad you liked it...enjoy your weekend.
which book did this come from - just completing an amazon order and want to add to it, x
Hi Katie....don't know. i was lurking on the internet last night looking for another poem and stumbled across this one..... However, you would enjoy the Giving Tree....it's a story I have read over and over again to Max, and have purchased it many times for baby shower presents.
ps. i think i loved it more than Max, though it always drummed up good chats.
That was very touching.
Love the quote!!!
Hey Muskie - just got back from a 17 day business trip to France and Germany and the best part was I got to go with my oldest son Andrew and my Dad.
Three generations of one family still active in one company - as though it was yesterday when my dad and I started this whole damn thing about 30 years ago!
It was the greatest trip yet - and one which I will hold in my heart. It was amazing to watch my dad as he listened to the words of wisdom coming out of his grandson in meetings with some of the most celebrated wine-makers of the world. He shone with pride as he realized that another generation has taken up the challenge and will continue to hold high the torch that he has passed on.
It was a grand trip and something that I wish everyone could experience.
Home now, I am trying to catch up on my reading and enjoyment of your blog.
Talk to you soon....
"DAISY"
Angel...it struck me that way as well. Glad to see you're around :)
Dustin....will be over to "visit" soon....the quotes you post are always thought provoking.
Daisy....and to think i thought you were "out standing" in your field of dreams and instead you were gallavanting across two tasty wine countries. Your trip sounds marvellous and most definately memorable.
A loving legacy evolving. I can picture the three of you right in the middle of it.
ps. Trick approached me about organizing chapel for the otterdale reunion....the theme for the weekend will be "looking forward"....alas no chapel on friendship :).....well......maybe one little james taylor song.
I was thinking.....yeah, I know it's a long time away....that perhaps you and I can teach that motley crew a couple of new songs to add to the song book. David Myles' When it Comes my Turn is definately on the top of my list. and maybe a Maritime folk song?? A John Allan Cameron or a Rankin song that would fit the theme? What do you think??
Happy Canada/Dominion Day!!
splendid dana!!!! Heartwarming to the core :) you sure do fulfill your moniker friend
