ZEEEE TIP OF ZEEEE ICEBERG

S
o, they arrested a bunch of Muslim thugs the other day in Southern Ontario. Good to be back in the Maritimes, far away from a potential ground zero. Scary to think that I was recently walking the streets and taking the subway in downtown Toronto, most likely the target of those nasty Taliban terrorists. Of course, we'll never know exactly where they planned to place all that lawn fertilizer, but chances are the CN Tower and area, and the subways were the most preferred. It would do the most damage.............the hub of Canadian commerce sits nestled in the shadow of the CN Tower. The subways are the crux of the infrastructure. Plus, the numbers of innocents that would have been annihilated would be at a maximum given the right time of day.

It's only logical.

Too bad we're dealing with illogic. Crazy, senseless, unpredicable, fearless, martyr wanabe illogic.

The authorities and the media are stating that it's a wake-up call for Canadians. Well, I have a few problems with that cliche. First off.......................OK, now that some are more awake than they used to be, what the frig can they do about it? Nothing, nada...........we're sitting ducks. Secondly, and this is the irony of the whole episode...........because the authorities arrested 17 individuals whom they have now linked internationally, whom they have now labelled "homegrown" as opposed to "born in Muslim land" most Canadians are going to think --

"Oh, good the police are on top of things. We're protected. We're safe. Nothing can happen to us. The bad guys have been arrested now. We can sleep better knowing they're behind bars."

Never underestimate Muslim extremists. Not only do they number in the thousands (millions?), they are brilliant strategists, saavy computer communicators, quietly living and plotting amongst us...........while we go along our merry way feeling oh so safe.

This is the tip of the iceberg. Canada has been on the Al Quaida hit list for a very long time. Given that we are now more visible (which is a good thing) in Afghanistan, our number is sure to be rising to the top. Given that the average Canadian (if he/she reads the paper, reads blogs, reads online info) has followed the various small and relatively quiet news stories related to the arrests on Canadian soil of jihadists linked to terrorism in other countries and knows that this may be the biggest arrest so far. Given that we share a relatively unpatrolled natural border with the United States. Given that our country wholeheartedly embraces multi-culturalism (which for the most part is positively enhancing) but has no clear screening process in place within the auspices of the Dept. of Immigration or Public Safety. Given that Canadians slurp up political correctness like popsicles and gives even evil the benefit of the doubt (how many Nazi nasties lived in our country after WW II?) Given that our government, federal, provincial, and municipal has been VERY slow on the uptake to put the manpower and infrastructure in place to ward of the evil Taliban terrorist meanies............................we are so ripe for the picking.

Last night, for example, on CTV, they reported that Vancouver has 4 anti-terrorist officers on the payroll. Vancouver is our largest port. Vancouver has more than 1 MILLION containers entering their ports every year. Vancouver thrives as a multicultural , multi-religious beliefs, multi-linguistic city, where no one is questioned and where everyone is accepted at face value. Granted, CSIS and the RCMP are involved in the ongoing monitoring of the activities of various gangs and groups who congregate in Beautiful BC.............. but 4 Officers? How can one find comfort in that.

So.........................the wake up call was heard.................most likely most who may have heard it for the first time have moved onto preparing for the hockey play-offs tomorrow night and has filed the fear under "can't do anything about that..................Not in my backyard anyways."

Yes, most have forgotten.
My greatest fear? The wake up call will come too late. We're are definately not out of the woods. We are definately within striking distance. We are definately harbouring many extremists in our midst. We're not going to hear that from the authorities. We're going to hear what most people want to hear.............all is well...............no worries................oh no, they werent targetting the subways................we have them all......................

From the Muslim community? What do we hear? We don't know who these crazy people are. They don't attend my mosque. They aren't linked to my community. Please don't smear us all with the same brush.
I'm left awake.............confused....................and not apt to believe either side...........frightening, isn't it?

Makes you wanna go down to the nearest pub for a pint and a smoke..................oh shit! I forgot! The authorities are more concerned about second hand smoke than terrorists blowing up buildings......................good to know we have our priorities straight.

God bless Canada.
